Teesside

A 39 mile pipeline from Newton Aycliffe to Skinningrove to connect industry with hydrogen

Our proposed plan

The Teesside pipeline

Our plan is to connect a 39 mile Teesside hydrogen pipeline to industry using new and repurposed gas infrastructure. The route stretches from close to Newton Aycliffe, across Teesside to Skinningrove on the east coast.  We are proposing this route following advanced discussions with potential industrial users who have indicated their willingness to use hydrogen as part of their decarbonisation plans.

The route covers the administrative boundaries of  Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Hartlepool Borough Council, Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council.

Associated infrastructure would include a range of Above Ground Installations (AGIs) which are required to facilitate the control of hydrogen on the network, including Pressure Reduction Installations (PRI), Block Valve Stations (BVS) and district governors. New sections of pipeline may be required to maintain supply to natural gas users.

During our planning we have aimed to avoid areas with a high population density, giving preference to rural and agricultural areas. We have included appropriate separation distances to residential properties, buildings such as schools and hospitals, and significant infrastructure such as the national transmission system. We have sought to avoid sensitive environmental features and minimised the number of major infrastructure crossings such as motorways, railway lines, A roads and main rivers.

The Pipeline

Pipeline Route corridors – the blue shading represents width of approximately 300 metres within which we are investigating a pipeline route.  Above ground pipeline sections, if used, would be limited to where existing pipe racks can be utilised.  There are small areas of optionality retained.  The pipelines are expected to range between 6 and 42 inches in diameter.

Modified Above Ground Installations – The yellow dots represent locations that already host Above Ground Installations for the natural gas network and have been identified as indicative siting areas where new  Above Ground Infrastructure would be added along the route. We will seek feedback on these locations during the consultation process and this may lead to changes as our plans progress.

We are committed to building successful working relationships with landowners and those with land interests along the route and are pleased to hear feedback via phone, post or email so that we can work collaboratively.
